Elijah Wood has ditched his L.A. digs for a glorious Victorian mansion in Austin, TX. The actor, currently starring in the FX television series Wilfred, is a huge music fan, dabbles in DJing (monikers include Wooden Wisdom and yes, DJ Frodo) and has his own label, Simian Records (Apples in stereo, Heloise and the Savoir Faire). So can Austinites expect to see Elijah spinning the decks during his down time here? Will he seek out a new band signing? Will he start his own band? Time will tell, but in the meantime, here’s some suggestions to get Elijah started in Austin. Welcome to the neighborhood!
End of an Ear
A self-described “music-nerd“, Elijah should hit up this awesome record store and play his finds while unpacking. Or wait, does he have people to do that for him?
Rated one of the best dance clubs in town, Elijah could totally bring the roof down if he DJ’ed one of Barbarella’s wild weekly parties. I’m thinking Thursday’s Grits & Gravy night is the perfect pairing for this 70s rock lover.
The White Horse on Thursdays
Thursday night at The White Horse basically means hipsters two-stepping to hipster bluegrass bands outfitted in cowboy boots and hats. Super delightful, super-authentic and so uniquely Austin. You don’t see people dancing and smiling (e.g. outwardly enjoying themselves) to live music on the East Coast, people are too busy looking aloof. A night out two-stepping? It’s practically a Texas right of passage. Just remember this Elijah, “slow, slow, quick quick, slow…”
Drinks at The Driskill Hotel
An Austin landmark for its history and design, The Driskill Hotel sits right in the heart of downtown’s 6th street and is the perfect place to host anything from a client meeting to an intimate dinner date.
Anyone who walks into this place dreams of furnishing their house with the weird and wonderful treasures you find inside. Elijah himself would no doubt find a few gems for his new pad.
There’s dozens of bars with live music every night of the week along 6th street. Spots like The Mohwak, Hotel Vegas, Red 7, The Parish (to name a few) always have something going on. I expect a music lover like Elijah will be scouring these places often.
