tUnE-yArDs – Water Fountain

Nikki Nack, the new tUnE-yArDs album, is out May 6, and “Water Fountain” is the first single to hit the airwaves. While the title may conjure up images of summertime sprinklers or cooling off with a cold drink, listen a little more closely. “Water Fountain’s” lyrics tell of a lack of water, and the violent lengths people go to acquire the liquid.

Merrill Garbus sings, “No water in the water fountain, we’re gonna get the water from your house….Life without water is a burning hell.” This “hell” is a reality for many across the planet and with global warming, a reality more and more people face. “Water Fountain” sheds light on the growing issue surrounding our most precious resource.

The singer spent time in Port-au-Prince, Haiti when writing the album so “Water Fountain” will likely be one of many politically underlined songs featured on Nikki Nack. Delivered, of course, with that tUnE-yArDs flair.
