The Scoop: 20 CMJ Bands You Oughta Know

From loud rock anthems, to dance party beats, to soft indie-rock, I present my list of 20 CMJ Bands You Oughta To Know. Let the games begin.

1. Gotye
Gotye (pronounced “gore-ti-yeah”) is the musical work of the Australian Wally de Backer. Where the stage name comes from I don’t know, but I do know that his handsome, anthemic electronic-pop could put a little spring in anyone’s step.

2. Exitmusic
Aleksa Palladino’s breathy, piercing vocals paired with hazy synth melodies make for a hypnotizing combination. She and guitarist Devon Church will have you captivated.

3. Savoir Adore 
I saw this Brooklyn band play for Fashion’s Night Out in 2010. Lead singer Deidre Muro’s emotive, rich voice is even more impressive in person. These sweet indie rockers have a bit of a 60’s flair that makes for music that’s a bit nostalgic and whimsical.

4. Sea of Bees
This folk rock singer/songwriter creates beautiful songs you can sink your teeth into.

If you’re looking for a loud, crazy, fun time, where dancing is sure to be had, then the theatrical pop/punk troupe Heloise & The Savoir Faire need to be on your radar. This show is sure to make you sweat.
