Is this what zero-gravity feels like? Because Tame Impala’s “‘Cause I’m A Man” has me feeling like I’m floating. The slick, fuzzed-out ballad is one of the dreamiest and sensual singles of 2015. Think ambient psych-rock with an R&B flair.
Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker focused on writing more introspective songs, with more emphasis on his vocals, for new record Currents. As the title implies, the album is about the changing tides of time, relationships, and everything in between.
The 3D video for “‘Cause I’m A Man” shows two Sims-like figures, with different symbols over their heads, representing different emotional and formal stages of a relationship (disco ball, television, match, wedding ring, flowers, etc). Everything starts out nice enough…until it doesn’t. All the while Parker’s vocals ring out with his thin excuse for why he acts the way he does, “‘Cause I’m a man, woman.”
It seems Parker may have better judgement than some of his peers, however. In an interview with Under The Radar, Parker said, “People who want to live like rock stars can if they want. It’s really up to you. If you want to spend $2 million on an album and fly out to different studios and do lines of coke off prostitutes’ tits, you can do that. If you want groupies, you could have that, too. I guess I was too discerning about myself.”
Look for Tame Impala’s new album Currents, out July 18th.
