Sound Dessert Nights premiered at Stay Gold Thursday, October 1st with sweaty, crowd-pleasing performances by Caterwaulrus (ATX), Jonny Gray (ATX), Sol Cat (TN) and Josiah (CA). Falling on the eve of ACL Festival weekend one, it was a pre-party of sorts, as festival-goers were out in droves looking to drink and be entertained.
The evening began with the psychedelic pop sounds of Caterwaulrus. The Austin local’s impressive fro and preference for paisley garnered multiple comparisons to Prince for more reasons than one. Though frontman John Michael Sherry wasn’t the only one turning heads. Caterwaulrus’ guitar player exhibited his eclectic talents when he briefly forwent his hands and used his MOUTH to play the stringed instrument. It’s one of those things you have to see to believe. Even witnessing it myself, I’m not quite sure how it was pulled off. That being said, I highly advise catching their next live show.
*Side note, Sound Dessert just premiered Caterwaulrus’ new single, “Naked On The Beach.” Listen to it here.
Singer/Songwriter Jonny Gray followed, serenading the room with his Americana ballads. Gray substituted his typical full-band setup for something more intimate and unexpected – a cello accompaniment. The duo made for a captivating set that highlighted Gray’s textured vocals, a voice that’s drawn comparisons to Eddie Vedder and Bob Dylan. It was certainly something special to behold. Listen to Gray’s Kickstarter-backed sophomore release, Promises Broke, and see for yourself what all the warranted-buzz is about.
Sound Dessert’s surprise guest was revealed to be Nashville rockers Sol Cat. Though the secret wasn’t very well kept as throngs of people gathered in anticipation of the band’s performance. The chemistry was undeniable as Sol Cat began their set. From one slinky ballad to the next, the boys never missed a beat. Nor did the crowd, who turned the intimate space into a dance floor. It was a privilege to have Sol Cat play Sound Dessert nights, yet it was also bittersweet as the talented five piece parts ways to explore new projects and adventures. Thankfully, we have the music to revisit anytime we need a hit of Sol Cat’s smooth psychedelic sounds.
Passing through the Lone Star State while on a solo tour, Los Angeles singer/songwriter Josiah treated the room to his soulful ballads. Playing acoustic guitar, harmonica, and stomping his feet for a drum beat, Josiah mesmerized crowds with his measurable talent, especially his songwriting. Some devoted fans even traveled from San Antonio just to see him perform that night. Josiah made the trip worth it, playing new songs and popular fan favorites like, “Can You Hear It” and the emotive “Long Gone.” Sound Dessert Nights was the final leg of Josiah’s tour before returning to Los Angeles to complete his new record. Stay tuned for big things from this artist in 2016.
Thank you to Caterwaulrus, Jonny Gray, Sol Cat and Josiah for the incredible night of music; to Stay Gold for hosting; to Deep Eddy Vodka for the delectable libations; and Vinylmnky for their support and badassery. Last but not least thank you to everyone who came out and made the first #SoundDessertNights an epic night to remember.
The second round of Sound Dessert Nights takes place Thursday, November 5th at Stay Gold with another round of music you won’t want to miss. Let’s do this all over again.
