If you’re not familiar with Sofar Sounds, allow me to fill you in – their “secret intimate gigs in living rooms around the world spotlighting emerging artists.” Chances are there’s one in your city waiting for you to RSVP and discover some amazing bands. Chances are you’ve already been. Here’s a recap of the latest Sofar Sounds held in Austin last month.
Whiskey Folk Ramblers deliver the goods when it comes to bluesy folk-rock, or as they call it, “folk noir.” Classic Western themes fill their songs like drinking, loyalty and gambling (in whatever form it may take). Lead vocalist Tyler Rougeux sings with a satisfying southern drawl while playing guitar and the occasional harmonica. Outfitted in suits, shades and fedora’s the band give off a Blues Brothers vibe with a Texas heart.
The gents had a show in Dallas the night before AND the night of, so it was a real treat they made the trip to Austin to play for Sofar.
Try not to lose count of Deer Vibes, there’s only 15 members after all! Once the guys and gals squeezed into the designated performance space, the band serenaded the room with gentle, introspective melodies. The size and ratio of Deer Vibes lends itself to some beautiful harmonizing. The number also means they’ve got an arsenal of instruments including horns, keyboard, violin, percussion, xylophone and more. Deer Vibes careful construction of each song ensures everything sounds seamless, not overpowering. Seeing them in such an intimate setting made for quite a powerful performance.
Deer Vibes has a new album in the works later this year so those not in Austin will get to hear them in action soon.
Raw pop. That sums up The Sour Notes. A little grungy, a little experimental and utterly spirited. They delivered a shot of energy with their set. The five-piece were selected to be an official showcasing artist at SXSW 2014 so expect to see this emerging band continue to pop-up on the scene.
Talented singer/songwriter Lily Kershaw comes from the city of angels and has the voice of one. She was in Austin to play a show at the Parish Underground as part of her tour with Mason Jennings and serenaded the luck Sofar audience with this special performance beforehand. Her talent has garnered her lot’s of recognition recently, including a performance on Last Call with Carson Daly last month. Catch her at SXSW if you can!
