Sigur Rós has an uncanny ability for creating breathtakingly beautiful music. Interweaving percussion, string and wind instruments, the band creates a utopia of sound. I don’t think I could ever tire of listening to their harmonic resonance.
Their latest album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (in English With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly) comes out this week. However the whole album is available for streaming on their Web site. It’s slightly more up-tempo compared to the likes of previous works but equally transcendental. Producer, Flood, helped Sigur Rós record the album and has also worked with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, The Killers, U2, PJ Harvery and Depeche Mode. In addition, the album contains one track in English, “All Alright” a first for the Icelandic natives. All the songs are amazing, one of my personal favorites being the soulful “Illegresi.”
If you have never watched any of their music videos I strongly suggest you do. They are as mesmerizing as their music. I recommend Hoppípolla, Viõrar Vel Til Loftárasa, Svefn-g-Englar and their new single Gobbledigook.
With the passing of the summer solstice (and subsequently the happiest day of the year) these songs will continue to have you feeling good. Please enjoy.
