Add some sweetness to your day with Sugar Dirt and Sand’s debut single, “Sugar.” Blending Motown and folk, the breezy, feel good song will put a smile on your face and a swing in your step.
Sugar Dirt and Sand frontman Mike McCabe’s honeyed vocals brim with a heart and soul that’s irresistible. “We’ll take this slow now,” sings McCabe on the dulcet track, as a buttery baseline and blithe percussion cruise steadily along. That is until the song peaks near the three minute mark with an intoxicating electric guitar solo.
I only have one question – do you feel the serotonin percolating?
Based in Raleigh, NC, McCabe strives to create relatable, heartfelt music that reflects “the highs and lows of his own journey,” and he does so beautifully. The journey expressed on “Sugar” is one of patience.
“I had spent months in an anxious cloud where I was questioning everything,” says McCabe, “and in my fear I cast aside someone that I truly care about. It was only then that I saw how clear it was that [this person] wasn’t holding me back; she was holding me up.
I took a trip to England around that time and did a co-writing session with my friends The Dunwells. The creativity was really electric; we put the whole song together in less than an hour. So ‘Sugar’ was born in North Carolina but grew up in Leeds.”
When it comes to the real sweet stuff what’s McCabe’s go to? “Vanilla ice cream, peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies, and a splash of milk in a bowl, washed down with an episode of Adventure Time.” Make that a double, please.
