Gnarls Barkley: A Not So Odd Couple

Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo, the musing mavericks behind Gnarls Barkley, have made a triumphant return with their latest album. An “odd couple” they may be, but when these two put their heads together in the studio, they form the perfect pair.

Blind Mary is one of my favorite tracks off the album. It is a sweet love song perfect for a breezy summer day. Mary, the object of Cee-Lo’s affections is “blind” to (what he sees as) his flaws and shortcomings. She may literally be blind, but I like to think of it as more of a metaphor for their relationship described in the lyrics, and how people in general can become so enamored with each other that they can’t “see” anyone else. Here’s a snippet of some of the lyrics:

“I heard her voice say catch me if you can.
Before you know it I was holding her hand.
It’s harder to imagine then understand
how she knows exactly who I am.”

Some of my other favorite tracks include “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” and “Going On.” The music video for “Going On” is phenomenal. It completely matches the up beat tempo of the song. Filmed in Jamaica the video features natives singing and dancing to the song-celebrating their discovery of a portal to another dimension. Get transported and watch the video!
