The cult-classic film Clueless, officially turned 20 this year and remains a relevant and beloved pop-culture staple across generations and cultures. As a personal favorite of this music blogger, Sound Dessert felt called to honor this milestone with a totally major party.
As If! A Clueless 20th Anniversary Party featured performances by Casual Strangers, Lowin and DJ After School Special on the decks.
We all know how much Cher and Dionne loved a good makeover and thanks to beGlammed, the “Uber for beauty,” the Bettys and Baldwins in attendance enjoyed Clueless inspired makeup and hair touch-ups (including an assortment of hair chalk for those feeling extra bold).
First up was Casual Strangers who’s experimental synth-pop hits all the right notes. Playing a medley of songs that at times could’ve been one of Cher’s soliloquy’s. On the band’s namesake single “Casual Strangers (We Used To Be Friends)” front-woman Katey Gunn reflects, “we used to be friends but now we’re just casual strangers. I have to admit, it really was strange running into you the other day.” Kind of like that time Cher and Tai didn’t talk for a few days and it was wretched.
Casual Strangers closed their set with an epic cover of The Muffs’ “Kids In America” which had everyone living for the “music-go-round.” These babes set the mood and got everyone in the 90’s spirit straight from the get-go.
Löwin took to the stage next, wasting no time turning things up to eleven. The four-piece delivers an energizing dose of rock ‘n’ roll as lead singer Sara Löwin breathes sharp lyrics that are quick-witted and clever. Take the song “Big Mouth” for example, which Lowin played halfway through their set: “Endless chatter, I can’t hear what’s the matter,” Houser sings, “settle down but keep up the good fight.” If you’re not paying attention you’ll miss the wordplay, but that makes it part of the fun.
The band treated the crowd to a couple new songs including “Never Without A Fang,” which Houser said was inspired by her dog. By the end of Löwin’s set everyone was thoroughly warmed up and in the zone.
Keeping the good vibes flowing was DJ After School Special who brought the dance party with classic songs from the early 90’s including hits by Aerosmith, Crystal Waters , CeCe Peniston and so much more. DJ After School Special seriously turned it up. Find him spinning classic Yacht Rock on Sunday’s at Stay Gold and say hey.
Special thank you to Casual Strangers, Löwin, DJ After School Special, beGlammed, The North Door for making As If! A Clueless 20th Anniversary Party possible and to Bells and Whistles Productions for capturing the night. Lastly, big thanks to all the Clueless/90’s lovers who attended. My heart is totally bursting.
