Accidental Icelandic superstar Ásgeir, went into the studio to record one song and came out with a full album. That album, Dyrd í dauðathogn became the biggest selling Icelandic debut release by a native.
To put that in perspective – one in ten Icelandic’s own a copy. Look out, Björk and Sigur Rós.
Last month, Ásgeir released an English version, In The Silence, which will no doubt gain considerable traction abroad. The singer commands attention with a sensitive, poignant voice and his delivery hits home, for so many, for good reason. The recording process was an unconventional but touching one. Ásgeir wrote the music and his 72 year old father, an accomplished poet, penned the lyrics.
It doesn’t get much more heart-warming or personal than that.
